I love hiking and often talk about it with my students. There is a family night at Mooney's Pond, near Peakes-St. Theresa's, this evening. Hiking, bonfire, hot dogs, and disc golf will be on sight. This was one of my favourite hikes with Will when he was a toddler, as he was capable of walking the full 2km trail with ease.

We will be learning this week about how our actions affect the environment and what we can do to become responsible environmentalists. If your child has a short video or a picture that they would like to share, maybe they have seen it on YouTube or in a magazine, please send it to me via email. We have finished our measurement unit and have moved onto data analysis. This goes well with our writing unit, writing opinions. Students are learning how to read data in diagrams and how to ask questions to find out more about the data. Please continue to practice multiplication (up to a product of 36) with third graders. As well, grade twos can practice adding and subtracting up to 100, with both regroupment and borrowing. Playing card games or games on the computer can be fun for students to learn this concepts. Thank you for all your donations towards the Easter Seals fundraiser. I will update when we have received a total from the office. Have fun in the rain this week and don't forget to look for worms. Just because :) Check out this link to see his Twitter post.
https://twitter.com/parker_grimmer/status/1118663764084183040 It's amazing that we are halfway through April. With the Easter bunny just around the corner, I sent home a colouring contest from Bulk Barn. The students had seen the one Will had completed and wanted their own. If you wish to enter their colouring page into the draw, please return it to BULK BARN by April 19th.
As a school we are fundraising for the Easter Seals. Our class will be holding a pyjama party on Wednesday (the 17th) and will participate with the whole school for Crazy Hair/Hat/Outfit day on Thursday (the 18th). Any monies sent in will be donated to the Easters Seals program to help them continue their support of many deserving charities in our community and province. Remember we have the long Easter weekend coming up, as such there are no classes on Friday the 19th nor Monday the 22nd. We will be celebrating Earth Week when we return on the 23rd. Have a wonderful week! I hope you don't get too wet. Thank you for helping your child send in pieces of their collections. We will be using them to help us develop our opinions this week. Books that you could read at home that model opinions are Mo Willems Pigeon series. I have added a couple links to stories online, please see La Lecture page for these.
It was so good to see you all during parent teacher interviews. I'm very proud of all of my students and the hard work they continue to do each and every day. I hope that your March break next week will be filled with fun and relaxation. I know your children have this break.
As you hopefully have noticed in the letter sent home last week, I am teaching the Bee Safe program this week. I sent home an outline of each of the lessons. We reviewed 1-4 on Monday. We will go more in depth with lessons 5 and 6 on Thursday and 7 and 8 on Friday. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. There will be skating this Friday, the 15th for the whole school. Grades 2 and 3 are skating between 9h45 and 10h45. If you are able to come help tie some skates and then skate with us, it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that everyone requires a helmet to go onto the ice, both adults and children. Any student who is not skating will be asked to bring work to the thinking room within the school to be supervised during our class skate. We have been learning lots about invisible forces, both internal and external forces. I took a few pictures and will post them in a new section named les unités transdisciplinaires. This is a new curriculum and covers social studies, science, art and health. Have a happy and healthy March Break, Mme Bethany Happy Islander Day! I hope that you had a great weekend to celebrate being an islander and to spend time with your family.
This past week, we made Creamy Dreamy Humus as part of our invisible forces unit. We are learning about healthy living to help fight off germs and microbes. All the students tried the humus and many even asked for more. Here is the recipe we used (although I didn't add the tahini or garlic) which is found on the Canada's Food Guide website, www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/canada-food-guide/tips-healthy-eating/meal-planning-cooking-healthy-choices/recipes/quick-easy-hummus.html I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. This week: Monday - No School - Islander Day Holiday Tuesday - Day 4, Music, Chef #11 Wednesday - Day 5, Phys Ed & Library, Chef #12 Thursday - Day 6, Music, Chef #13 Friday - Day 1, Phys Ed, Chef #14 We have entered our next formal evaluation period. This means I will be doing formal assessments in reading, writing, and math. I will be taking time from guided reading and writing workshops to complete all my assessments. Students may have a guided reading book for longer than usual. They are expected to change the other four books daily. Parent teacher interviews will be held March 7th and 8th. I will send home times again as they were changed due to the winter storm in November. Here are the sight words for
2s and 3s - Je fais, tu fais, il/elle/on fait, 3s only - nous faisons, vous faites, ils/elles font In math we are starting our measurement unit. We are continuing to learn about invisible forces, this week we will complete our internal forces and then next week move on to external forces. Please remember to complete a weekly lice check. Have a great week, Mme Bethany Hello!
It's been a busy last few weeks in and out of the classroom for myself. This week will bring Valentine's Day celebrations on Thursday and skating on Friday. As the weather is looking a bit wintery tomorrow, I sent paper bags home to decorate. Please send the bags back to school on Thursday so students can collect their Valentine's cards. You will find a list of students at the front of the homework duo-tang. Skating is between 12h15 and 13h15 on Friday. I am in an in-school meeting so students will be skating with M. Zain. Any help with tying of skates is greatly appreciated. As well, parents are encouraged to skate with us. Regulations require that all person on the ice, wearing skates or boots, must wear a helmet. Sight words this week are: 2e - ce, je cherche, classe, fête, mardi, je prends, faim 3e - qui, six, oui, camion, sel, cinq I sent home our dictée from last week. Please note, that while I do have the students write a spelling test, I am most interested in seeing that they generalize what they have learned into their writing. That is to say, if we have worked on the «in» sound, I expect students to write a form of «in» when they hear it in a word. We're taking a bit longer to get through multiplication and division. But I believe we had our aha moment this week and students were able to make in the connection between multiplication and repeated addition, as well as division and repeated subtraction. Students in grade two have been working on double digit adding and subtraction to 100. I have noticed that many students are starting with the tens rather than the ones. If you are practicing adding and subtraction at home, please encourage your child to start with the ones. This is especially important as we are diving into regroupement. Have a wonderful rest of your week, Bethany |
